Parent Notifications
Alerts about your child's grades, attendance, and progress
OptiLearn keeps you informed about your child's learning with a small, focused set of parent-only notifications. You won't be spammed with every quiz attempt — only the things that genuinely warrant a parent's attention.
What you'll be notified about
The four parent-specific notifications:
| Notification | When it fires |
|---|---|
| Child graded | An assignment your child submitted has been graded by an instructor. Includes the score and pass/fail. |
| Child missed a live class | Your child was absent from a scheduled live class they were enrolled for. |
| Low grade alert | Your child's average in a course has fallen below the passing threshold. Useful early-warning signal. |
| Weekly progress digest | A weekly email summarising every linked child's progress — recent grades, attendance, upcoming work. |
These all run through the same notification engine as student notifications, so each one can be delivered as email, push (on the mobile app), in-app (the bell on the web), or any combination.
Where to manage your preferences
Go to Settings → Notifications in the sidebar (web) or Me → Settings → Notifications (mobile).
You'll see one card with the four parent notifications above. Each row has switches for email / push / in-app and (for non-critical ones) a frequency dropdown.
The weekly digest also lets you pick the day and time it's delivered, in your account's timezone.
Defaults
Out of the box, the parent notifications default to:
- Child graded — email + push + in-app, immediate
- Child missed a live class — email + push + in-app, immediate
- Low grade alert — email + push + in-app, immediate
- Weekly progress digest — email only
You can adjust any of these to suit your preferences. None of the parent notifications are locked — all four can be turned off entirely if you want.
Even if you turn everything off, you'll still get critical account-level emails (password resets, security alerts). Those aren't governed by the notification preferences page.
How notifications interact with multiple children
If you have more than one child linked to your account, each notification clearly states which child it's about — both in the title and in the message. There's no risk of mixing them up.
The weekly digest covers all of your linked children in one email, with a section per child.
Get push notifications on your phone
Install the OptiLearn mobile app and you'll receive push notifications the moment they fire — much faster than checking email. The app picks up your existing preferences automatically on first sign-in.
If you haven't installed the app, the Push column on your preferences page is greyed out with a tooltip explaining why. Install the app and the toggles light up.
Tips
- Keep "Low grade alert" on. It's the single most actionable parent notification — early warning lets you talk to your child before the situation worsens.
- Use the weekly digest if you don't want event-by-event emails. One tidy email a week instead of many one-offs.
- Set the digest delivery time to a moment when you have five quiet minutes — Sunday evening is popular.
- Don't mute "missed live class". If your child is missing classes, you want to know.
